Procedure

2-Phthalimidoacetonitrile (3.85 g) was dissolved in glacial acetic acid at 70° and 2,4-dimethylheptan-2-ol (3 g) was added; followed dropwise by conc. sulphuric acid (2.8 ml) the temperature being maintained between 65° and 70°. The final mixture was stirred for 15 minutes and then added slowly to ice cold water (150 ml). The resulting solid was collected, washed with water and dried in vacuo. It was dissolved in hot benzene, a little insoluble material filtered off and light petroleum (b.p. 40°-60° ) added to give 2-phthalimido-N-(1,1,3-trimethylhexyl)acetamide as a colourless solid, m.p. 131.6°.
