Procedure
20.3 g of 5-methylthio-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-carboxylic acid cyclohexylmethylamide were dissolved in 130 ml acetic acid and 25 ml water. 16 g pulverized potassium permanganate was then introduced upon stirring to cause the temperature to increase to 70° C. Thereafter, stirring was continued for 30 minutes. The mixture was cooled and then mixed with 300 ml ice water. The formed manganese dioxide was reduced with a solution of 14.3 g sodium metabisulfite in 100 ml water. The precipitated compound was removed by suction and recrystallized from ethanol.
