5-[[Hydroxy(methyl)amino]methyl]-2-furanmethanol (7.85 g) was added to a stirred solution of 2-aminoethanethiol hydrochloride (5.68 g) in concentrated hydrochloric acid (15 ml) at 0° during 45 mins. After 48 hr at 0° the crystalline solid which separated was mixed with isopropanol (40 ml), filtered and crystallised from ethanol to give the title compound (9.1 g) m.p. 164°-165° dec.
