To a glass 0.5L reaction bottle are added 10.0 g (58 mmol) of 1-oxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-hydroxypiperidine, 2.85 g (29 mmol) sulfuric acid, 200 mg 5% Pt on C and 100 mL water. Catalytic hydrogenation is carried out at 50 psi for 30 minutes at room temperature. Catalyst is removed by filtration through a pad of Celite. Removal of water yields the product as an pale yellow solid.
