Procedure

A mixture of 1-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-oxo-1,3-dihydro-2-benzofuran-1-carboxamide (25 g) (Step 1 of Example 2), 2-methyl-1,2-diaminopropane (40 mL), and toluene (125 mL) was heated at reflux for 18 h in a flask equipped with a water separator. The mixture was cooled to ambient temperature and extracted with water. The organic phase was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and evaporated to dryness. The residue was slurried with ethanol. The solid was collected by filtration and dried to give the title compound (26 g) as a white solid, m.p. 168-170° C. Anal. for C19H17N2O2F: Calculated: C, 70.35; H, 5.28; N, 8.64. Found: C, 70.16; H, 5.35; N, 8.55.
