Reaction Steps

1.28 g (4.63 mmole) of 2-[2-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)morpholin-2-yl]ethanol [prepared as described in step (d) above] were dissolved in 30 ml of methylene chloride, and 2.66 g (26.3 mmole) of triethylamine, 1.28 g (5.55 mmole) of 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoyl chloride and 5 mg of 4-dimethylaminopyridine were added to the resulting solution. The mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 6 hours. At the end of this time, the reaction solution was poured into an aqueous solution of sodium hydrogencarbonate and extracted with methylene chloride. The extract was then washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride. The organic extract was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography, using a gradient elution method, with mixtures of methylene chloride and acetone ranging from 4:1 to 7:3 by volume as the eluent, to obtain 1.72 g of the title compound.
