Procedure

A mixture of 3,4-dihexoxybenzaldehyde (15.3 g., 0.05 M), sodium borohydride (1.85 g., 0.05 l M) and ethanol (350 ml.) is stirred at room temperature for one hour and then concentrated in vacuo. The residue is dissolved in chloroform (500 ml.), the solution washed with water (4×100 ml.), dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated under reduced pressure to give 3,4-dihexoxybenzyl alcohol (15.0 g.) as a pale yellow oil.
