To a solution of 17 g of 3,4-ethylenedioxyphenylhydrazine in 100 ml of ether was added dropwise 11 g of 80 % acetaldehyde at 5° - 10°C over a period of 30 minutes. After stirring for an additional 2 hours at 5° - 10°C, the ethereal solution was separated, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The ether was evaporated, and the resultant residue was distilled to give 15.4 g of acetaldehyde-3,4-ethylenedioxyphenylhydrazone having a boiling point of 139° - 142°C (0.15 mmHg).
