A mixture of 2-n-butyl-3-(4'-chloro-2'-hydroxybenzoyl)benzofuran, 30 ml. of epichlorohydrin and 15 g. of potassium carbonate in 200 ml. of ethanol was refluxed for 18 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated, water was added to the residue and the aqueous solution was extracted with methylene chloride. The extracts were washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo to give 2-n-butyl-3-[4'-chloro-2'-(2,3-epoxy)propoxybenzoyl]benzofuran which was purified by dry column chromatography on alumina with chloroform as eluant.
