Alternatively, 3-acetyl-1,3-bis(2-cyano-5-trifluoromethylphenyl)triazene is prepared by addition of 25 ml. of acetic anhydride to a solution of 5.0 g. (0.013 mol.) of 1,3-bis(2-cyano-5-trifluoromethylphenyl)triazene in 65 ml. of pyridine. The reaction mixture is stirred at 25° for twelve hours, then it is poured into water. The aqueous mixture is extracted with ether, the layers are separated and the ether phase is washed with water, 5% aqueous sodium bicarbonate and water, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to give 3-acetyl-1,3-bis(2-cyano-5-trifluoromethylphenyl)triazene.
