A solution of 2-bromo-N-(α,α-dimethylbenzyl)propionamide (24.0 g; 0.088 mole) in ethanol (500 ml) was cooled to 0°C. The solution was saturated with ammonia (5 hours). Stirring was continued at room temperature for about 7 days. The solvent was removed under vacuum. The oily residue was taken up in benzene. The benzene phase was extracted with 5N HCl. The aqueous phase was washed with ether, made alkaline with 5N NaOH, saturated with NaCl and extracted several times with benzene. The benzene solution was dried over anhydrous Na1SO4 and the solvent was evaporated. The N1 -(α,α-dimethylbenzyl)alanineamide was obtained as an almost colourless oil. Yield: 14.6 g (79.8 %).
