Procedure

A mixture of 13.3 g. of cis-1,2,3,4,4a,5,10,10a-octahydrobenzo[g]quinolin-7-ol, 5.4 ml. of 35% aqueous formaldehyde solution, and 6 g. of palladium-on-carbon catalyst was diluted to 350 ml. total volume with ethyl alcohol and the mixture was shaken under 400 lbs./sq. in. of hydrogen until uptake ceased. Filtration to remove the catalyst, evaporation of the solvent and crystallization of the resulting residue from ethyl alcohol gave 10.8 g. of solid which on recrystallization from ethyl alcohol yielded cis-1,2,3,4,4a,5,10,10a-octahydro-1-methyl-benzo[g]quinolin-7-ol as a white solid, m.p. 213°-216°C.
