Procedure

4.3 g. (10mM) of α[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)thioxomethoxy]-benzeneacetic acid, diphenylmethyl ester together with 0.35 g. of methanol in 30 ml. of dioxane and one drop of a 10% sodium imidazole-dioxane solution, are held at 40° for 5 hours. After drawing off the solvent, the oily residue is dissolved in chloroform and washed three times, each time with 30 ml. of water. After drawing off the solvent, 2.3 g. of α-[(methoxycarbonothioyl)oxy] benzeneacetic acid, diphenylmethyl ester are obtained from the dried chloroform solution in the form of a pale yellow oil which crystallizes after 24 hours. Recrystallization from cyclohexane/petroleum ether yields 1.6 g. of white crystals, m.p. 74°.

Workup

  1. washwashed three times
