Reaction Steps

1-Benzyl-2-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-(2-methylphenyl)piperazine from Step 1 above (3.2 g; 10 mmol) in 50 mL of MeOH containing 150 mg of palladium black was shaken on a Parr apparatus under an atmosphere of hydrogen (55 psig) for 18 h. The catalyst was removed by filtration through Celite and the filtercake was washed with MeOH. The filtrate solvents were evaporated under reduced pressure to give the title compound as an oil (1H-NMR: consistent with structure; FABMS: M+H @ m/e=221; HPLC: 98%, retention time 5.38 min).
