Reaction Steps
By Hydrolysis of Diphenylphosphinous Chloride. Diphenylphosphinous chloride (700 g, 3.17 mols) is added with rapid stirring to 1400 ml of distilled water. The temperature rises to 70° C. The solution is heated at reflux 1 hour, then cooled. The lower organic layer is separated from the water, dried, and distilled in vacuum giving diphenylphosphine (207 g, 70 percent yield), b.p. 151° C/10 mm. From the residue, 327 g (95 percent yield) of diphenylphosphonic acid is obtained by recrystallization from ethanol.
