n-Butyllithium (2.5 M in hexane, 16.5 ml) was added to a solution of ethyl 2,6-dichlorobenzoate (6.89 g) in THF while maintaining the temperature below -70° C. The mixture was stirred at -78° C. for 1 hour and poured onto solid carbon dioxide pellets. The mixture was acidified to pH1 and extracted with ether, washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness and the residue was recrystallized from a mixture of cyclohexane and ether to give 2,4-dichloro-3-ethoxycarbonylbenzoic acid (435 g) a s a white solid mp 168° C.
