Reaction Steps
1-(4-Methyl-5-thiazolyl)-1-phenylethanol (2.5g) in chloroform (25ml) was treated with thionyl chloride (4.5ml). The mixture was heated under reflux overnight and then evaporated to dryness. Aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate was added and the mixture was extracted with dichloromethane. The material thus obtained was purified by flash chromatography to give the title compound as an oil. Treatment with anhydrous hydrogen chloride in diethylether gave 1-(4-methyl-5-thiazolyl) -1-phenylethene hydrochloride, m.p. 131-133.5° C.
