Procedure
A solution of 1.82 g (32.4 mmol) of potassium hydroxide in 1.8 mL of water and 10.0 mL of ethanol was added to 1.22 g (3.70 mmol) of (4,4-dipropylthiochroman-6-yl)(trimethylsilyl)acetylene (Compound 30) and the resulting mixture stirred at room temperature for 5 hours during which time it became homogeneous. The solvent was removed in-vacuo and the residue was acidified with 5% aq H2SO4 and the product was extracted with 2×50 mL of ether.
