A solution of 17β-hydroxy-7α-methyl-4-nitroandrost-4-en-3-one (4.2 g, 12.1 mM) in acetone (400 ml) is cooled to 0° C. and is treated with Jones reagent (4.0 ml). Any excess reagent is decomposed by addition of methanol. The solids are filtered off and the filtrate is concentrated to a green solid. This material is purified by flash chromatography on silica gel to give 7a-methyl-4-nitroandrost-4-ene-3,17-dione (aqueous acetone).
