To a mixture of 2-(5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxazolylmethoxy)pyridine-5-methanol (12.2 g) and toluene (200 ml) was added thionyl chloride (5.39 g), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hr. Iced water was added to the reaction mixture, and after neutralization with saturated aqueous sodium hydrogencarbonate, the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and concentrated. The residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography to give crystals (11.7 g, yield 90%) of 5-chloromethyl-2-(5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxazolylmethoxy)pyridine from a fraction eluted with ethyl acetate-hexane (1:3, v/v). Recrystallization from ethyl acetate-hexane gave colorless prism crystals. melting point: 86-87° C.
