Procedure
To a solution of 3,5-dibromo-2-methoxy-6-(trifluoromethyl)isonicotinaldehyde (980 mg, 2.7 mmol) in ethanol (10 mL) was added sodium borohydride (102 mg, 2.7 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred for 20 min, concentrated, and the residue was purified by flash chromatography (silica gel; 50% ethyl acetate/hexanes as eluant) to yield the title compound. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 5.10 (s, 2H), 4.05 (s, 3H), 2.32 (br s, 1H).
