To a solution of 5-(3-tert-butyl-5-methoxycarbonylbenzyl)-2,2-dimethyl-5-[3-[(triphenylmethyl)thio]propyl]-[1,3]dioxane-4,6-dione x (11 g, 16.5 mmol) in 1,4-dioxane (15 ml) was added a solution of sodium hydroxide (4.63 g, 115.5 mmol) in H2O (15 mL) at 25° C., and the mixture was stirred at 100° C. for 1 hour. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and a 10% aqueous KHSO4 solution. The organic layer was dried over MgSO4, concentrated. The crude material was recrystallized from ethyl acetate/hexane mixture to afford 2-(3-tert-butyl-5-methoxycarbonyl-benzyl)-2-[3-[(triphenyl-methyl)thio]-propyl]malonic acid XI (9.0 g, 90%) as a white solid: 1H NMR (CD3OD) δ1.4 (s, 9H), 1.4 (m, 2H), 1.6 (m, 2H), 2.1 (t, J=8.0 Hz, 2H), 3.2 (s, 2H), 7.1-7.4 (m, 16H), 7.7 (s, 1H), 7.9 (s, 1H); 13C NMR (CD3OD) δ24.8, 31.8 (3C), 32.4, 33.3, 35.6, 39.0, 59.5, 67.7, 126.2, 127.7, 128.9, 129.6, 130.7, 131.5, 132.9, 137.8, 146.2, 152.6, 170.1, 174.5.
