Procedure
To a suspension of 4-chloro-4′-cyanobenzenesulfonanilide (4.03 g (13.8 mmol)) in 15 ml of acetic anhydride, 97% fuming nitric acid (0.61 ml (14.3 mmol)) was added dropwise with stirring at room temperature. After one hour's stirring at 50° C. the reaction mixture was poured into water to give crystals, which were then collected by filtration and washed with water to give 4.30 g (93%) of 4-chloro-4′-cyano-2′-nitrobenzenesulfonanilide as pale yellow crystals.
