Reaction Steps
4′-Fluoro-N-methyl-p-toluenesulfonanilide (1.00 g (3.58 mmol) was dissolved in 5.0 ml of acetic acid. To this, was added with stirring at room temperature, 97% fuming nitric acid (0.35 ml (8.19 mmol)) dropwise, and the mixture was stirred at 100° C. for one hour, poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with saturated aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to give crude crystals. Diethyl ether was added to these crystals. The crystals were filtered and washed to give 0.81 g (70%) of the title compound as yellow crystals.
