Procedure

To a solution of N-(4-Chlorophenyl)-3,5-dimethyl-4-isoxazolesulfonamide (1.10 g (3.84 mmol)) in acetic acid (4.0 ml), fuming nitric acid (0.20 ml (4.68 mmol)) was added dropwise with stirring at room temperature, and the mixture was heated at 50° C. for one hour with stirring. Water (20.0 ml) was added to the reaction mixture and the resulting mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography with acetone-chloroform-hexane(1:3:8) as eluent, to give 0.82 g (64%) of N-(4-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)-3,5 dimethyl-4-isoxazolesulfonamide as yellow crystals.
