Reaction Steps

4.66 g (0.02 mole) of Compound 2, 50 ml EtAc and 15 ml SOCl2 were refluxed until the reaction mixture became a clear, yellow solution (1 h). After removing the solvent and excess reagent, the residue was crystalized from n-hexane. Yield: 4.5 g (85%), m.p. 95-98° C. For the 4-position isomer, yield 4.2 g (81%), m. p. 112-114° C.
