To an ice cooled solution of methyl (4S)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-acetate (1.0 g, 5.74 mmol) in methanol (10 ml) was added portionwise NaBH4 (1.3 g, 34.4 mmol). After the addition was completed, the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. Water (40 ml) was added, and the resulting mixture was stirred for several minutes and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried (magnesium sulfate), and concentrated in vacuo to give 2-[(4S)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl]ethanol (808.9 mg, 96.4%) as a colorless oil.
