Procedure

The 3-(dimethylaminomethylene)-chroman-4-one starting material was prepared from 4-chromanone (5.0 g, 33.7 mmol) and N,N-dimethyl-formamide diethyl acetal (15 ml, 87.5 mmol) to give the desired product as orange crystals (4.3 g) m.p. 135.8°. MS (ES+) 204 (100%).
