5 g of 10% palladium carbon and 500 ml of methanol were added to 112 g of 4-(α-acetoxybenzyl)-2-methoxypyridine, followed by conducting hydrocracking in a hydrogen atmosphere. The catalyst was filtered off and the filtrate was evaporated. Then, the residue was neutralized by an aqueous saturated sodium bicarbonate solution and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and the solvent was removed, to give 73 g of the target compound.
