Procedure
To the cooled solution of N-ethyl-N-methyl-1H-imidazole-1-carboxamide (5 g, 32.7 mmol) in acetonitrile (10 mL) was added slowly dimethyl sulfate (4.12 g, 32.7 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight and then was evaporated under vacuum to yield 1-[[N-ethyl-(N-methyl)amino]carbonyl]-3-methyl-1H-imidazolium methyl sulfate (9.1 g). 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 9.7 (s, 1H); 7.7 (s, 1H); 7.6 (s, 1H); 4.1 (s, 3H); 3.65 (s, 3H), 3.5 (q, J=7.2 Hz, 2H), 3.15 (s, 3H), 1.3 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 3H).
