Procedure

A solution of 9-bromo-3-(3,5-dimethylphenyl)acridine, 29, (0.6 g, 1.6 mmol) in 10 ml anhydrous diethyl ether:THF (1:1) was cooled to −78° C. To the solution was added 1.6 M n-BuLi in hexanes (2.4 mmol, 1.5 mL) dropwise over a period of 15 min and then a 1.0 M solution of Me3SnCl in hexanes (3 mL, 3 mmol). The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature, stirred for 18 hours and concentrated in vacuo. Purification of the orange residue by flash chromatography (100:30:1 hexanes:ethyl acetate:triethylamine) afforded 30 (0.65 g, 91%) as a yellow solid. GC-MS revealed contamination of the product with 5-10% 3-(3,5-dimethylphenyl)acridine that could not be separated by chromatography. The stannane was therefore employed in the Stille cross-coupling with 1,8-dibromonaphthalene without filter purification. 1H-NMR δ=0.70 (s, 9H), 2.44 (s, 6H), 7.08-7.10 (m, 1H), 7.49-7.56 (m, 3H), 7.76 (ddd, J=1.4 Hz, 6.6 Hz, 8.8 Hz, 1H), 7.88 (dd, J=1.9 Hz, 9.1 Hz, 1H), 8.13 (d, J=8.5 Hz, 1H), 8.22 (d, J=9.1 Hz, 1H), 8.27 (d, J=8.5 Hz, 1H), 8.49 (m, 1H). 13C-NMR δ=−4.2, 21.8, 125.3, 125.4, 125.5, 127.7, 129.6, 129.8, 130.1, 130.4, 130.8, 132.8, 133.5, 138.4, 139.8, 142.0, 148.2, 148.2, 156.4.
