Analogously to Example 29A, 4.00 g (16.9 mmol) of methyl 2-(1-hydroxyethyl)-5-phenylpentanoate are reacted with 34.0 ml of a 1 M sodium hydroxide solution to give 2-(1-hydroxyethyl)-5-phenylpentanoic acid.
