Procedure
1-Amino-2-methylpropylphosphonic acid (2.7 g) described in Synthesis 370(1988) was dissolved in water (27 ml), and the solution was added with 5 N aqueous sodium hydroxide (10.5 ml) and 3-phenylpropanoyl chloride (2.6 ml) and stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was washed with diethyl ether and acidified with hydrochloric acid. The organic substances were extracted with ethyl acetate, and the extract was washed with saturated brine to obtain 2-methyl-1-(3-phenylpropanoylamino)propylphosphonic acid (554 mg, 11%).
