4-Benzyloxy-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-[4-(2-dimethylaminoethoxy)phenyl]-1-phenylbutan-1-ol (10.7 g) is dissolved in methanol (70 ml) and concentrated hydrochloric acid is added to make the solution acidic. The mixture is stirred for 4.5 h at room temperature and then at 50° C. for 1 h. The solvent is evaporated and the product is purified by flash chromatography (eluent toluene:triethylamine 24:1). The yield is 5.6 g as a mixture of E- and Z-isomers (1:2).
