A mixture of 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenylguanidinium nitrate (1.44 g, 5.0 mmol), 1-phenyl-2-cyano-3-dimethylaminopropen-1-one (1.0 g, 5.0 mmol) and sodium hydroxide (0.22 g, 5.5 mmol) in ethanol (20 ml) was heated at reflux for 18 h. On cooling the resulting precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with water and diethyl ether, then dried to give the title compound (895 mg) as a green solid m.p. 246°. δH (d6DMSO) 10.37 (1H, br s), 8.93 (1H, s), 7.99 (2H, m), 7.60 (3H, m), 7.25 (2H, m), 3.75 (6H, s) and 3.63 (3H, s).
