3,4,5-Trimethoxyphenylguanidinium nitrate was prepared by heating a solution of 3,4,5-trimethoxyaniline (5.49 g, 30.0 mmol), cyanamide [Aldrich, 50% solution in water w/v] (3.50 ml, 34.5 mmol) and concentrated HNO3 (2.1 ml, 30.0 mmol) in ethanol (30 ml). The solid which formed on cooling to room temperature was collected by filtration, washed with ethanol and dried to give the desired material (4.60 g) as a grey solid m.p. 187°.
