Reaction Steps

The product from Example 2A (3.4 g, 16.2 mmoles) in acetic acid (20 mL) was treated with zinc powder (2.68 g, 41 mmoles, purchased from Aldrich) and stirred for 48 hours. An additional portion of zinc (1.0 g, 15.3 mmoles) was added and stirring continued for 4 hours. The reaction was filtered through a pad of Celite with CH2Cl2 and concentrated. Purification by flash chromatography (silica gel, 4:1 hexanes:ethyl acetate) provided the title compound as a yellow solid (1.98 g, 64%).
