Reaction Steps

2,5-Dimethyl-4-(3,5-di-t-butylphenyl)indene (3.4 g, 10 mmol), prepared as described above under (k), was dissolved in 200 ml of pentane. To the solution was added 4.1 ml of nBuLi (2.5 M in hexane), followed by stirring for four hours at room temperature. A white solid precipitated from solution and was collected by frit filtration and washed with additional pentane. Yield: 3.0 g (88%).
