Reaction Steps

The product of Example 1, Step (A) (0.54 g) was dissolved in dimethylformamide (5 mL) wand treated with sodium hydrogen sulfide (0.29 g) and heated at 60° C. for 18 hours. The solvent was removed in a vacuum and the residue stirred with 1 M hydrochloric acid (15 mL) for 1 hour. The resulting solid was filtered, rinsed with water and dried in a vacuum at room temperature to give 4-(4-mercapto-5-methyl-2,6-dioxo-3,6-dihydro-2H-pyrimidin-1-ylmethyl)-benzoic acid tert-butyl ester (0.475 g, 91% yield). 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 10.99 (s), 7.76(d, 2H), 7.27 (d, 2H), 5.52 (s, 2H), 1.91, (s, 3H), 1.50 (s, 9H).
