The procedure of Example 1 (E) is followed using sodium hydroxide (4 g, 0.1 mol), 5 mL of water, 2-hydroxy-2′nitro-3-α-cumyl-4′-phenyl-5-tert-octylazobenzene (4 g, 0.0072 mol) and formadine sulfinic acid (6.5 g, 0.06 mol) to give the title compound as a pale yellow crystalline solid melting at 137–139° C.
