A solution of 1-benzyl 2-methyl (2S)-4,4-difluoropyrrolidine-1,2-dicarboxylate in methanol was refluxed with 2N NaOH (2 eq) for 2 hours. Methanol was removed and pH adjusted to 1 with 3 N HCl obtaining a suspension which was extracted several times with ethyl acetate. Combined organics were dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated to give title product as a dark brown oil.
