1-(7-Methoxycarbonylheptyl)-4,5-diphenyltriazole (1g) was treated with 2N sodium hydroxide in aqueous ethanol at reflux temperature for 2.5 hours. The ethanol was removed in vaCuo and the residual mixture acidified with 2N aq HCl. The aqueous solution was extracted with ethyl acetate and the organic extracts combined, dried over magnesium sulphate and evaporated to dryness in vacuo. Recrystallisation from ethanol and water gave 1-(7-carboxyheptyl)-4,5-diphenyltriazole (0.61 g, 64%) as a white solid, m.p. 103°-104° C. Found: C, 72.66; H, 6.92; N, 11.44%
