Procedure

To a solution of 5-hydroxy-3-[(7-azaindol-3-yl)methylene]-2-oxindole (2.773 g, 10 mmol) in toluene (100 ml) was added portionwise under nitrogen NaH 80% (0.300 g, 10 mmol). After the salification was complete 3-chloro-1,2-propane-diol (1.547 g, 14 mmol) was added and the mixture heated to reflux for 5 h. After cooling water was added, the organic phase washed and evaporated to dryness. The residue was submitted to flash chromatography using CHCl3 --MeOH mixtures as eluant to give pure title compound in about 70% yield.
