810 mg of the product of Step B dissolved in 10 ml of 66% formic acid were stirred for one hour at ambient temperature and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure at less than 30° C. and the residue was dissolved in a mixture of acetonitrile and methanol. The solvents were evaporated and the residue was crystallized from ether to obtain 516 mg of racemic 1,1-dimethylethyl 7-[2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)-2-methoxyimino-acetamido]-3-(4-methoxyphenylthio)-8-oxo-4-thia-1-azabicyclo[4,2,0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylate.
