A solution of 122.2 g (400 mmol) of 5(S)-[1(S)-(Boc-amino)-2-phenylethyl]dihydrofuran-2-(3H)-one [preparation, See Example 2b)] in 1500 ml of methanol is hydrogenated, at RT and under low pressure, in the presence of 4.0 g of Nishimura catalyst [Rh(III)- and Pt(IV)-oxide monohydrate, Degussa]. Filtering off the catalyst, and evaporating the filtrate, results in the title compound: TLC Rf (D)=0.54; FAB-MS (M+H)+ =312.
