Procedure

A solution of [[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]amino]-9-oxothioxanthen-4-carboxaldehyde (3.6 g; 10.57 mmol) in 50 mL of formamide containing 3.6 g of formic acid was refluxed for 1.5 h and then was allowed to stand at room temperature overnight. the reaction mixture was diluted with water (400 mL), basified with 3 mL of 5N NaOH solution, stirred rapidly for 30 min, and the precipitated solid was filtered, washed with water, and dried, yielding 3.1 g (79%) of N-[[1-[[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]amino]-9-oxothioxanthen-4-yl]methyl]-N-methyl formamide (Formula I: R1 =R2 =Me; Q=CH2NHCHO; R8 =H; n=3), as a yellow powder.
