A solution of 1-[[2-(diethylamino)ethyl]amino]-4-(hydroxymethyl)-7-methoxythioxanthen-9-one (8.8 g, 0.023 mol) in toluene (268 mL) was heated to 60° C. under nitrogen and then MnO2 (13.2 g) was added. The mixture was heated overnight, filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to afford 7.05 g (81%) of 1-[[2-(diethylamino)ethyl]amino]-7-methoxy-9-oxothioxanthen-4-carboxaldehyde (Formula II: R1 =R2 =Et; R8 =7-OCH3 ; n=2).
