Procedure
To a solution of 1-benzyl-4-hydroxymethyl-5-methylimidazole (0.85 g, 0.0042 mol), prepared according to the method of Ueda et al., BioMed. Chem. Lett., 4:1623, 1994, in CHCl3 (20 ml) at 0° C. was added SOCl2 (0.421 ml, 0.0126 mol). The reaction was refluxed for 3 h, cooled to rt and the solvent removed in vacuo. The resulting solid was rinsed with Et2O (3×10 ml) and dried under vacuum to give 1-benzyl-4-chloromethyl-5-methylimidazole hydrochloride (13) as a white solid; mp 188° C.
