Reaction Steps

A solution of 1.4 g (21 mmol) of imidazole and 1.0 ml (6.3 mmol) of benzyl 2-bromoacetate in 40 ml of dichloromethane was stirred at ambient temperature for 16 h. The resulting solution was washed with water, dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated in vacuo. Silica gel chromotography of the residue using 5% methanol in chloroform provided 1.22 g (89%) of the desired compound as an oil. 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 4.73 (s, 2H), 5.21 (s, 2 H), 6.96 (t, J=1 Hz, 1H), 7.11 (t, J=1 Hz, 1H), 7.36 (m, 5H), 7.51 (br s, 1H).
