A 15 mL round bottom flask was charged with (+)-(4aR)-(10bR)-8-(2-fluorenyl)-10b-methyl-1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,10b-octahydrobenzo[f]quinolin-3-one (31 mg, 0.08 mmol), 0.2 mL of butanol, and potassium t-butoxide (27 mg, 0.24 mmol). Methyl iodide (0.015 mL, 0.24 mmol) was added and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 h. The mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate, and purified by silica gel chromatography (ethyl acetate eluent) to give 26 mg (82%) of the title compound as an off-white solid. mp 175° (decomp). FDMS: m/e=393.
